David Whitney, Underwater Welder
My mom is currently involved in one of these, except the name of her thief is David Whitney. She refuses to believe that it’s a scam, and even talks about how he’s going to whisk her away to Florida where he lives — you know, when he’s not welding an oil rig in Nigeria. He’s promised her the world and she believes all of it, even in her face of glaring red flags and seemingly obvious hiccups in his storyline.
It’s heartbreaking to see, because no one deserves happiness and to find someone more than her; she’s actually lost her husband, and has been through so so much. She has taken such good care of her kids and loved ones — her flaw is her naïveté and vulnerability, which makes her a perfect target for these cruel, disgusting, despicable people.
The worst part is that there’s no justice, and once she finally figures out that this is a scam, it will crush her.
